Homemade Dog Treats

When we got our dog Oscar as a puppy about a year ago, the idea of making him homemade doggie treats seemed like a fun idea. It turns out he has a very sensitive stomach and most of the treats, biscuits, and bones on the market don’t agree with him. I decided to start researching some recipes sooner rather than later. What I found was more than I expected! I had to be careful, though, so I took the basic ingredients and changed a few things. {Oscar loves apples and peanut butter so they were definitely going in there!}

Here’s the adapted recipe:
2 tablespoons plain applesauce (3 tablespoons if you want softer treats)
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup rolled oats

See? Nothing fancy. If your dog likes bananas you can substitute a mashed ripe banana for the applesauce. Mine does not. He makes that clear! Add some honey if you want a little more sweetness. Also, you don’t need a special dog bone cookie cutter. Just use any old cutter you happen to have…or use a pizza cutter and slice the dough into pieces that are suitable for your dog’s size. My cookie cutter was about 3 inches wide.

Okay, let’s get baking! Grab a medium/large mixing bowl and a spoon to mix the ingredients. To the bowl, add the applesauce, peanut butter and 1 egg. Combine until blended well.

After mixing first three ingredients together, add the flour, baking powder and rolled oats.
Mix well. At this point I like to get my hands in there and help it out.

When all of the ingredients have been combined, form a ball from the dough and place it on some wax paper for rolling. If you don’t have any wax paper, you can use some wheat flour and dust your work surface.

Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thick. {Pick it up and turn it a few times as you roll.} Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment paper, lightly grease the baking sheet so they don’t stick. Using your cookie cutter, cut out your treats and place them on the baking sheet. I get about 12-14 treats using my bone cookie cutter.

{Note: I use parchment paper for all my baking. It keeps the goodies from sticking to the pan, I don’t have to grease the pan, and it’s easy peasy when it comes time to clean up. Try it if you have never used it!}

Bake the treats at 325 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. The time will depend on how thick you rolled your dough. Mine took closer to 20 minutes. As soon as you see them get golden brown on the edges, they are done. Remove from oven, cool in pan for 10 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

They get Oscar’s Seal of Pupproval! (I just made that up as I was typing…)

    Where did you get the adorable dog bone cookie cutter? And — have you ever tried freezing them? I’m asking for 2 reasons: 1) my pup Louie loves frozen things to soothe his mouth as he teethes; and 2) I tend to make huge amounts of a recipe in the spring and then portion them into containers and freeze them — all to spare the air conditioner in the summer.

    Brilliant idea, though. I so enjoy reading your blog!

    • Thank you! I used to have a cookie business and have many cookie cutters so I’m not exactly sure where that one came from. Most likely it either came from one of the craft stores like Michael’s or from http://www.cookiecutter.com. Honestly I have never tried freezing them but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to! I’d wrap them in a good plastic wrap (I like Glad Press ‘n Seal for this) and then in a Ziploc to make sure they don’t lose their flavor. I do have a frozen dog treat recipe that I plan on posting soon (maybe sooner than later!).

    • I found a dog bone cookie cutter at Walmart and I have frozen them numerous times as we have a Great Dane and when I make treats I make a VERY large batch and freeze them to use as needed.

  2. Just made these for my 3 rescues: Sully (German Shep/Lab) loves them as well as Andy (ShiTzu) but Sophie (Chihuahua) turned her nose up! I too want to know how long they will keep in the freezer. Thank you for a great and easy recipe.

    • Hi MJ ~ thanks for stopping back and letting me know! 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! πŸ™‚ I would say you can freeze them for up to 4 months if you wrap them tightly and get most of the air out. Try wax paper between layers so they don’t stick, and use freezer ziploc bags or an airtight container. The dough would freeze well also! Maybe Sophie would prefer bananas in there instead of applesauce?

    • You can use all-purpose flour instead of the wheat flour. I just use it because it’s healthier. Some dogs are allergic to wheat products, so any flour substitute that they can tolerate would be fine.

  3. Yum – looks so delicious! I have tried several other dog treats only to have them turn out on the softer side. Will these turn out hard and crispy or soft? Also, how long will they last if kept in the refrigerator?

    • Hi Cheryl…These are hard for a few days, but I do notice they don’t stay crispy for their whole shelf life. Do not use the egg wash on top if you want them hard. (In fact, I may take that part out of my post – I never use the egg wash!) Bake them until they are nice and golden.

      I’m assuming because there are no preservatives (and maybe because of the peanut butter?) that they don’t stay crisp. Not only with dog treats, but other things I bake from scratch get soft after a few days.

      They should last a couple weeks in the refrigerator, but maybe you could put half the batch in the freezer? They would last a few months in there.

  8. Just made ones and usually use bananas but used applesauce this time and my ninja. Loved how easy and the ninja even balled or for me! Nice and crispy and my Aussies are loving! cheaper store bought abitnd healthy cuz i know what they contain! I always try first, look. Thank you!

    • Hi Lynn…You can take out the flour but I would still add some baking powder or baking soda to the recipe. I’m not sure how much more oats you’d need, but you can experiment and let us know!

    • Hi Savanna! You can do either, whichever you prefer. I’d probably freeze the dough and bake later, but just make sure either way you wrap it up well. Use plastic wrap and then foil, or a good resealable freezer bag and take as much air out of it as possible. Hope the pups enjoy them!
